Higgs boson searches in cascade decays of supersymmetric particles with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

Abstract : The LHC is expected to deliver the first proton-proton collisions in September 2008 and the ATLAS experiment is designed to explore a large spectrum of phenomena that could arise from these interactions. In the context of supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model, the lightest Higgs boson can be produced via cascade decays of supersymmetric particles. We investigate the possibility of observing such events with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Firstly, we focus on the ATLAS capability in measuring the missing energy due to the passage of supersymmetric particles escaping the detection. Then, we show that, for some regions of the Minimal Supergravity parameter space compatible with the last LEP searches, the lightest Higgs boson can be discovered with less than 10 fb^(-1), giving results competitive with standard Higgs production channels. We also study the possibility of measuring quantities related to the masses and couplings of the supersymmetric particles involved in the process. Finally, starting from these measurements, we use the SFitter tool to set up a global fit to the parameters of the underlying supersymmetric model, showing the validity of such procedure for constraining the theoretical interpretations of future LHC data.
