Nouvelles approches en optique cristalline: distributions angulaires de l'absorption et de l'émission, auto-doublage, quasi-accord de phase angulaire

Abstract : This thesis presents new approaches in crystalline optics : the angular study of absorption and emission of fluorescent ions in a monoclinic crystal ; the characterization of frequency self-doubling ; the development of the theory of the "angular quasi-phase matching". With a spherical crystal of YCOB : Nd, the first measurements of the absorption and emission indicatrices have been performed : the eigen directions of absorption and emission are different, and are also different from the principal axes of the optical frame. Theoretical developments have lead to the description of the observations. These results show the impossibility to simultaneously optimize absorption and emission for such media, as well as the necessity of the sphere for these studies. An extension of the methodology with spherical crystals to the simultaneous measurement of the laser and non linear optical properties of self-converting media is wanted. The theoretical stuty of a cavity enclosing a self-doubling laser medium shaped as a sphere has been lead, and the realization is in progress. A generalization of the quasi-phase matching has been lead for any direction of propagation within periodically polled media. A analysis based on the group theory has lead to define symetries and topologies of the solutions of these interactions. Potentialities of the angular quasi-phase matching, illustrated with PPLN : MgO, have shown a access to broader spectral ranges, and also somethimes to broader spectral tolerancies, compared to classical quasi-phase matching. Thus, this work has contributed to develop theoretical, methodological and metrological tools for crystalline optics.
