Prosodie et économie du discours : Spécificité phonétique, écologie discursive et portée pragmatique de l'intonation d'implication

Abstract : At the interface between Prosody and Discourse, my study aims at determining the domain of phonetic variability and the discursive meaning of a French intonational tune : the “implication contour”, by means of the ecological observation of the use speakers make of it in a closed corpus of radio debate. Using a perceptive identification of the occurrences of the implication contour as described by Delattre (1966), I propose a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the variability of its phonetic realisation. I show that, unexpectedly, these realisations are often mistaken with the ones of the continuative rise, and also that the alignment of the pitch pick on the syllabic nucleus of the contour's last syllable (left for implicative, right for continuative) is crucial for their differentiation. I also show that implication contour is often mistaken with another rising-falling contour with the pitch pick aligned with the penultimate syllable. A detailed discursive analysis, performed using the Geneva school discourse model (Roulet et al., 2001) allows me to give rise to the specific interactive and argumentative use participant of the radio debate make of the implication contour. The synthesis of my prosodic and discursive analysis leads me to propose a compositional interpretation of the pragmatic meaning of this contour.
