Abstract : In this thesis we study both experimentally and theoretically shaping and complete characterization of ultrashort laser pulses and we apply shaped pulses to coherent control of simple systems. Firstly, we describe design and building of a high resolution pulse shaper for near infrared pulses. We detail the different steps of manufacturing and stress on the novelty of this device. Then we discuss its limitations and present the results obtained. Secondly, we use this shaper for coherent control experiments on rubidium atom. In these experiments we control the transient behavior of the atom in interaction with a resonant pulse. We first recall the origin of this transient, called coherent transient, and its first experimental observation. We also present different experiments where this transient is controlled by shaping the exciting pulse. Then we show how we can access the atomic transient wave function by combining different controlled coherent transients. We use this technique of atomic spirograph to retrieve the transient wave function of the atom when excited by different kind of control pulses. The experimental results are presented and discussed. We also compare the atomic spirograph to other techniques for wave function measurement. We finally describe a method for complete pulse characterization based on the atomic spirograph. This method allows the measurement of the pulse interacting with the atom. Its unusual properties are then detailed. Finally, the different experimental pulse measurements are presented and the possible extensions of this technique are discussed.
