Psychopathologie et migration : repérage historique et épistémologique dans le contexte français

Abstract : The aim of the thesis is to historically and epistemologically locate reports of psychopathology towards migration in the French context. A comparison of the two terms suggests that the “migration” phenomenon falls within the domain of psychopathology and that the outline of a field of research may therefore be traced. Far from exhaustive, this dissertation will set out several significant paradigms and will detail their internal logic (i.e. clarify the conditions of formalization, paradox and mutual confrontation). Therefore, five paradigms will be treated successively, without giving in to the illusion of a linear and cumulative story : colonial psychiatry ; immigrant selection ; the psychopathology of migration ; disturbances in ethnopsychiatry ; clinical approaches to exile. The present work does not aim to demonstrate a positive theory, but more modestly attempts to support the pertinence of a path bound by history and epistemology, in order to show that migration forces clinicians to displace their attention and knowledge. A fundamentally unresolved question continues, nevertheless, to inhabit these pages : how to conceive of the migrant as not identical to himself ?
