Instabilités couplées à haute fréquence dans les moteurs - fusées à ergols liquides : étude du couplage chambre de combustion/système d'alimentation

Abstract : In 2002 the Aestus engine of the upper stage of Ariane 5 of the flight 142 presented high frequency combustion instabilities, which were probably as coupled instabilities between the fuel MMH (monomethyl- hydrazine) supply dome and the combustion chamber during the ignition phase. For this reason we were interested in the comprehension of the coupling mechanisms driving hybrid instabilities and in the theoretical and numerical development of these mechanisms. We first study characteristic times of processes taking place inside a liquid propellants rocket engine combustion chamber, as soon as propellants are injected: primary atomization, secondary atomization, mixing, heating and vaporization of droplets, and chemical reactions. Results of this analysis show the processes which are coupled with the acoustic wave of hybrid instabilities. Then a modelling of the two principal systems was made: the feeding system containing liquid or gaseous propellants inside a complex geometry, is modelled by the lumped parameter, based on an electric schema; the combustion chamber system where many phenomena take place, has a simple geometry, nearly cylindrical, and has been modeled by a global approach based on the Navier-Stokes equations with introduction of sources terms. A procedure of coupling was carried out between the two system by the function admittance of the injection. The full coupling model has been validated on a simple configuration and applied to a real case, the Aestus one.
