Histoire de la géographie au Québec

Abstract : This document written in 1974 analyses the specific characters of geography as a scientific discipline in Quebec province. It relies on a systematic survey of publications (books, journals and master and PhD thesis) and a few interviews of strategic actors. After recalling briefly the steps leading to the emergence of the scientific institutions, the main argument is about the influences from France, Britain and United States on geography at university level in Quebec. While the influences from Europe are essential, they did not mix much locally. The American influence has been growing but transmitted more through research funding and mainly publications rather than personal invitations. It is the necessary adaptation of concepts and practices to a different geographical milieu which progressively built the specific characters of geography in Quebec and ensures it original contribution in the world of geography.
