Problèmes de morpho-phonologie verbale en français, en espagnol et en italien

Abstract : The three romance languages studied here do not give us the opportunity to observe rich interactions between derivation, inflection and phonology anywhere but in their verb systems.

A consequence of this fact is that the individual marking of the verbs and their segregation into different paradigms for each mark, are universally accepted. The idea that a sophisticated morphology based on the activation of phonological mechanisms would be an apt way to describe verb inflection in those three languages, is generally granted little plausibility.

This ambition of this work is to build such a morphology that would capture the native speaker's intuition about conjugation. This enterprise is grounded on two prejudices:
- complete neglect of diachronical data of any kind
- no use of linguistically unmotivated categories such as verb groups in the caracterisation of the native speaker's knowledge of the verb system.
This work adresses three goals:
1) Suppression of the verb groups in the conjugation model, which is to derive the different surface forms of the different "groups" from general phonological mecanisms fed by morphology
2) Establish a status for suppletion and defection allowing an insight into the representation of a suppletive or defective verb internalised by the native speakers. In other words, we wish not only to give a site of lexicalisation to suppletions and gaps but also to study their interactions with the unique conjugation paradigm that we postulate.
3) Unification of the regular and irregular verbs treatment using this same unique paradigm for all the verbs. The intuition underlying this last goal is that from a sample of irregularity, a native speaker is capable of generalisations about other irregularities and that this capability has to be represented in our model.
