Système d'animation d'objets virtuels : De la modélisation à la normalisation MPEG-4

Abstract : The current multimedia information society brings up new challenging issues in terms of production, distribution, and access of multimedia content. New technologies can be used to address issues related to the communication and content access for the hearing impaired community. In this context, this PhD thesis reports on technical problems raised by the representation, animation and transmission of Virtual Characters (VC).

The original contribution of the thesis consists in a novel virtual character animation framework, called Skeleton, Muscle and Skin (SMS). Starting with the formulation of the requirements, the report analyses the existent VC technologies as well as the capabilities of existent multimedia standards. The animation methods proposed are mathematically formulated and the corresponding scene graph structure and compression stream are proposed. The obtained results, in terms of realistic animation and low bit-rate compression, justify the promotion of the SMS in the MPEG-4 standard.
