"Re-panser" la vulnérabilité psychique observée chez certains enfants de migrants

Abstract : The paper finds its meaning within the framework of transcultural clinical practices. It consists in re-examining the question of psychological vulnerability observed in some migrant children. The children and their families studied in this paper come from the Comore islands. Previous studies have defined this vulnerability in connection with the impact of migration on affective and cognitive psychological development. This impact is of a traumatic nature and lead to a division of worlds. This process is an essential factor in the genesis of vulnerability. However, in regards to our clinical practices, we esteem that this factor leads to a more generalised vulnerability and finds its meaning in a shared family history marked by traumatic events, having often taken place in the previous generations and which have not yet been dealt with. This vulnerability also manifests itself in an unbalanced relationship between the visable and the invisable worlds, which compose the univers of children of family, we met. The symptoms expressed by the children carry the marks of these different factors of vulnerability. The function is to restore the collective family memory and the link to their origins. This restoration actualizes itself by means of ritual.
