Modélisation des processus non-linéaires de génération et de propagation d'états de mer par une approche spectrale

Abstract : This thesis deals with the analysis of the nonlinear process of generation and propagation of gravity waves. A fully non-linear High-Order Spectral (HOS) model has been developed to improve understanding of these phenomena. This is an accurate and efficient method thanks to the surfacic formulation coupled with the spectral resolution.

An original treatment of the wave generation is introduced. It allows the simulation in a wave basin of complex 3D wave fields, which could be very steep. Several comparisons with experiments conducted in the ECN wave tank are presented.

Then, oceanic simulations in an open domain are proposed. A particular interest is put on the occurrence of freak waves in real seas. The significance of nonlinear effects as well as the abilities of the model to correctly describe these phenomena are pointed out. Comparisons with methods which are typically employed for this kind of simulation denote the relevance of the HOS method used here.

Finally, the problem of behaviour at sea is discussed. The use of HOS method in coupled models developed in Laboratoire de Mécanique des Fluides is proposed. This will describe the incident wave field in a precise and efficient way. This coupling is validated on different test-cases.
