Etude de l'inflammabilité d'un nuage de particules d'aluminium partiellement oxydées

Abstract : Hazard of ignition of dust clouds in the workplace and the fact that new regulations (like European ATEX directives) are in effect imply the risk assessment of any process by operators. This study deals with aluminium dust and particularly with the influence of the oxide content on the ignition thresholds. An experimental set-up based on Hartmann apparatus was designed for this work. A specific spark-generating system was developed to produce sparks at nearly constant power and to control the energy by controlling the spark duration. A statistical method was adapted and used to determine the ignition thresholds leading to a probability of ignition of 50%. An original process to increase, under control, the oxide coating of particles is presented. Experimental results confirmed the growth of ignition thresholds with the oxide content of tested samples. In a second time, some results of flame velocities and pressure measurements during the first stage of the explosion are presented. A numerical model leading to the correlation between pressure evolution and flame velocity in the explosion chamber was tested. Those computational data are compared to experimental ones.
