Le devenir des immigrés en France. Barrières et inégalités

Abstract : Researches on immigration in France had fallen, both theoretically and empirically, well behind those undertaken in other countries, and particularly the USA. This thesis' aim is to make some progress in this field by using longitudinal census data, over a long period of time (1968-199), covering about ten immigrants groups in France, and confronting empirical evidence with international theoretical advances on this subject. The research approach puts the stress on the multidimensionality of the assimilation process, investigates some causality issues between these dimensions and tries to take into account the several actors taking part in the assimilation dynamics. Taken together, empirical evidence points out structural hindrances and inequalities that characterize the immigrants' situation in France, revealing a sort of ethnic stratification denied for a long time in this country. These inequalities are described and measured in various fields ; whether we consider participation in the labour market, spatial distribution, the naturalization process or inter-marriage patterns, great disparities are observed between immigrant groups referring to some underlying mechanisms of discrimination. This thesis is also concerned with the scientific controversy between cultural and structural assimilation, or more generally, assimilationist and pluralist positions. Evidence in this regard invalidates any hypothesis of a cultural gap between the new immigrants and natives. It is structural assimilation that seems to be at stake in France, particularly for groups who suffer mostly from discriminations.
