Etude pétrographique et isotopique des spéléothèmes du sud-ouest de la France formés en contexte archéologique : Contribution à la connaissance des paléoclimats régionaux du stade isotopique 5

Abstract : Speleothems are one of the rare terrestrial archives capable of providing high-resolution records of climate variability that can be reliably fixed within absolute chronological frameworks. However, those formed in archaeological contexts have never been the subject of thorough studies. The main purpose of this study is thus to test their informative potential. Speleothems formed during isotopic stage 5 in cave entrances and intercalated in archaeological sequences (Coudoulous and Bourgeois-Delaunay) were the subject of radiometric, petrographical, chemical and isotopic analyses. The use of the U-Th dating method by TIMS improved the precision of the chronological framework of speleothem formational episodes and allowed to refine the chronostratigraphy of the sites. A continuum of crystalline structures was identified and was correlated to calcite conditions of precipitation and with the δ13C signal. δ13C and δ18O variations recorded by speleothems were analysed at levels of high resolution and compared to other climate proxy-records. These isotopic signals were mainly influenced by temperature. Their analysis allowed for the identification of rapid-scale climatic events and provided a highly detailed record of OIS 5e. This study demonstrates that speleothems from cave entrances can be used to infer regional paleoenvironmental conditions and to refine the chronological framework of prehistoric occupations. Thus, they are likely to contribute to the resolution of problems pertaining to correlations between sites and to bring new information to light that can contribute to the study of environmental influences on prehistoric societies.
