Planification de la conservation de la biodiversité et modélisation territoriale à l'île de la Réunion

Abstract : In this thesis, we develop concepts, methods and tools to integrate biodiversity conservation with land use planning. The study site is Réunion Island (2512 km²) that is part of the 34 world biodiversity hotspots. This island is experiencing rapid spatial and socio-economic mutations that threaten the persistence of biodiversity patterns and processes. A systematic and integrated approach toward conservation planning, based on participative, predictive and prospective modelling of the social and geographic space, is proposed in order to favour the emergence of territorial solutions for biodiversity management. The method integrates a Geographic Information System, expert knowledge, satellite and aerial images and a spatial optimization model coupled to a Multi-Agents System. The analysis and methods developed contribute to the integrated management of biodiversity in islands and, more generally, in coastal zones.
