Modifications des propriétés structurales et électromécaniques de monocristaux piézoélectriques PZN-xPT : ingénierie des domaines et dopage au manganèse

Abstract : Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)1-xTixO3 (PZN-xPT) single crystals exhibit for x = 9% the best piezoelectric properties known to date. In this work, these properties are studied in relation with the crystal structures and ferroelectric domain states of crystals with composition x = 7, 9 and 12%.

First of all, the domain states obtained for various compositions and different electric field strengths and directions are characterized by means of permittivity measurements as a function of temperature. Notably, the instability of the single domain state 1T in tetragonal PZN-12%PT for plates thinner than 300 microns is evidenced and confirmed by XRD.

The second part is devoted to domain engineering in PZN-12%PT poled long [101]. Measurements of the full electromechanical tensor describing the intrinsic properties as well as observations of multidomain crystals by polarized light microscopy are presented. A model is developed that takes into account clamping effects in the multidomain crystal and yields analytical expressions for its effective properties. This model satisfactorily accounts for the observed extrinsic decrease of the transverse dielectric constants.

The third part focuses on crystals doped with manganese. The effects of doping are found to be similar to what is known for classical piezoelectric materials (hardening, increase of the mechanical quality factor, decrease of permittivity and piezoelectric coefficients) but seemingly correspond to a modification of the intrinsic rather than extrinsic contributions. Moreover, it is shown that doping destabilizes the single domain state 1O in PZN-7%PT and in contrast stabilizes the 1R state in PZN-9%PT.
