Modélisation des effets optiques de la turbulence atmosphérique pour les grands télescopes et les observations à Haute Résolution Angulaire

Abstract : Future Extremely Large Telescopes will give us the possibility to observe with High Angular Resolution. However, their conception requires a precise knowledge of optical effects due to atmospheric turbulence at large scales. This study aims to investigate the experimental validation of optical turbulence modelization for ground based observations.
The characterization of wavefront large scale properties is performed with the long baseline GI2T/REGAIN stellar interferometer with the perspective of observations with the VLTI/AMBER interferometer. In the case of large baselines, wavefront deformations do not follow the same statistical laws as in cases of shorter distances of separation. This study provides confirmation that the amplitude of wavefront spatial deformations do not increase indefinitely with the baseline extension. This highlights the saturation of variables related to spatial deformations when distances considered are larger than the value of the wavefront outer scale.
The GSM ('Generalized Seeing Monitor'), an unique instrument dedicated to the wavefront outer scale measurements, is used in an extended configuration to experimentally validate the different existing models of optical turbulence during observations at the Calern Observatory. A multi-layer modelization of the outer scale is proposed to describe optical effects of atmospheric turbulence corresponding to each altitude.
Finally, a part of this study was devoted to the development of the 'Monitor of Outer Scale Profile' which measures the vertical distribution of the wavefront outer scale from detection of Moon's limb position fluctuations. Several campaigns of observations have been performed at the "Observatoire de Haute Provence" and Mauna Kea Observatory and first measurements of wavefront outer scale profiles are presented.
