Une micro-ethnographie indigène au sein d'un dispositif de validation d'acquis dans l'académie de Montpellier : A travers les méandres, franchissant les écluses, ainsi coule la reconnaissance de l'expérience...

Abstract : The assessment and validation of prior learning offers the possibility of certification outwith formal education processes (Law of the 17th January 2002). The opportunity to obtain the whole or part of a certificate or diploma recognises the fact that experience is itself educative, on condition that the learning can be adequately identified and proven. Within the national education system, candidates and jury respectively are invited to elaborate and evaluate a portfolio which demonstrates clearly, by the description and analyse of concrete situations, the exploitation of competencies and the application of knowledge. The present research is an ethnographic exploration by a counsellor involved directly in the validation process in Montpellier. This emic position throws light on the dynamic role of language in the different interactions between the candidates and the professionals who accompany them, from the first information session to the final delivery of the certificate. The research suggests that both candidates and counsellors are engaged in a dual accompaniment, which facilitates the identification and marshalling of the evidence to be validated, and leads to new forms of recognition. In asserting that the dynamic role of language is at the heart of the processes of recognition, this research places the work leading to the validation of prior learning in the interactive domain of active listening and self expression, and this within a system of values reflecting social norms that each contributor is constantly involved in (re)formulating. This threefold dynamic, articulating accompaniment, languages and values, offers validating agencies a dialogue aimed at recognition and outlines for all those involved lines of action, where action is understood as transformation
