Une analyse sociolinguistique des marquages du territoire en Bretagne : toponymie, affichage bilingue, identités culturelles et développement régional

Abstract : The TIBED research consists in bringing forward an innovative sociolinguistic approach to toponymy and public signs, which aims at establishing the current social significance and economic repercussions of the presence and use of all forms of bilingual and symbolic public signs in Brittany. This work consists in a reflection on the regional language, a part of both a cultural heritage and a socio-economic dynamics that should be studied taking into account the recent evolution of the place of these languages in the French society. The toponyms as well as the other forms of signs (advertising, road signs for example) are meaningful markers of the regional cultural identity and we consider this research from a socio-economic point of view that contributes to the valorisation of the Breton heritage, identities and territories. Part 1 clarifies the sociolinguistic context of Brittany. The dynamic and assertive cultural identity of the region certainly is a basis for bilingual and symbolic public signs / advertising. Part 2 aims at measuring the presence of bilingual and symbolic signs and understanding the mechanisms of their creation. Communication refers to social practices, discursive practices (pictures also being speeches), actors of transmission, processes of transmission, transmission resources in the fusion of contexts and a set of significations. By the means of various investigations and methods of analysis, part 3 shall make it possible to evaluate the motivations, symbolic perceptions and practical effects, especially in the creation of an image of Brittany (territorial marketing, advertising, media, local communities) as a response to a social request. At last, a broader contextualised analysis makes it possible to present the repercussions of bilingual and symbolic signs, as well as to make proposals intended for the institutional and private economic and cultural decision-makers.
