La thèse d'Etat de géographie (1960-1984) : la diffusion de l'innovation au risque des contraintes disciplinaires

Abstract : French geography underwent a paradigm shift from 1960 to 1980. How did the thesis contribute to this? Today, it is mainly considered to have been a barrier to innovation. However, it is necessary to consider the opposite : that the thesis had the capacity to stimulate innovation. The thèse d'État is undervalued today by the university community and the negative representations attached to it prevent a clear perception of its role. Within a particular genre and writing style, with its “associated environment,” the thèse d'État was innovative, even in the frame of local schools as Bordeaux or Grenoble. The concept of underdevelopment and the urban geographies are used to try to understand the processes and the rhythms of innovation in the thèse d'État.
