Facteurs du milieu, gestion sylvicole et organisation de la biodiversité : les systèmes forestiers de la montagne de Lure (Alpes de Haute-Provence, France)

Abstract : For historical reasons embedded in a high ecological requirement context, northern Mediterrranean mountain forests are currently undergoing considerable changes. In the Lure mountain forest, the sylvigenetic maturation of Pinus nigra austriaca plantation forests is characterized by a recolonization by Fagus sylvatica. The sustainable management of these transforming forests must include this long term potential. Our study is within this framework of both a new dynamics in biodiversity and a change in traditionnal forest management practice which tends to include the protection and use of autochthonous species in forestry production.
Our phyto-ecological inventory indicates that: (i) Forest stand altitudinal zonation on the northern side of the Lure mountain is not strictly correlated with specific plant communities; ii) the planted Pinus nigra forest demonstrates the poorest specific richness in autochthonous species, although the mixed native Abies alba - Fagus sylvatica forests has the highest; (iii) some forestry techniques can be favorable to autochthonous plants, such as progressive thinnings within the Pinus nigra stands and small area uneven-age thinnings in the F. sylvatica and mixed F. sylvatica - A. alba stands.
Results from in situ seedling transplantation indicate that the absence of A. alba at low elevation (800 m) on the northern side of the Lure mountain is related to lack of dispersal possibilities (no seed trees at this elevation) rather than ecological requirements. Lack of seed trees could be due to late glacial maximum refugial conditions, but also most certainly to Man and its forest destruction activities which started during the Neolithic in this region.
