STABILITE DE LA CONVECTION THERMIQUE ET/OU SOLUTALE EN COUCHES FLUIDE ET POREUSE SUPERPOSEES

Abstract : This work deals with the onset of natural convection in a horizontal fluid-porous system. A linear stability analysis is carried out using the one and two domain approaches, both including the viscous diffusion contribution in the porous layer. Our results are compared with those obtained with the Darcy formulation of the two-domain approach. Agreement is found between the two domain formulations, indicating that the inclusion of the Brinkman term plays a secondary role on the stability results. However, the one domain stability curves present rather different behavior when the transition between the fluid and the porous regions is described by discontinuous variations of the physical properties. It is shown that one and two domain approaches predict
the same stability thresholds only if differentiation is executed in the sense of distributions. The influence of the different control parameters on the stability of the thermal and thermosolutal convection cases is analyzed.
