Approche multi-biomarqueurs chez l'épinoche à trois épines (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) : un modèle pour la surveillance des écosystèmes aquatiques continentaux

Abstract : The aim of this work was to characterise the usefullness of three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) as a sentinel fish species to assess aquatic environment contamination using a set of biomarkers. For this purpose, assays for biomarkers of xenobiotic metabolisation, oxidative stress, neurotoxicity and estrogenic or androgenic endocrine disruption have been developed and validated. Our laboratory and field results show that investigated biomarkers are sensitive and inducible parameters. To run the full potential of biomarkers, basal values mesured in reference site are established and their seasonal or gender variability is characterised. Field application provides information on early effects of contamination. Moreover, it provides complementary informations compared to chemical analysis and populational investigations and allows sampling site discrimination. At least, the development of a biomarker-based index allows the synthesis of collected data and offers a perspective for using biomarkers in aquatic ecosystem management.
