Modélisations discrètes de la rupture dans les milieux granulaires

Abstract : For granular media, which are non-associated materials, diffuse failures exist for stress
states strictly included within the plastic limit condition. This thesis is about the description
and the prediction of such failures and it is based on the idea that diffuse failure is the
response path which is subjected to bifurcation with a loss of constitutive uniqueness at the
bifurcation point. The sign of the second-order work (the local form of Hill's condition of
stability) is used to detect bifurcation points. Analyses are mainly developed from direct
simulations using the Discrete Element Method. For numerical granular assemblies of
different densities a bifurcation domain is exhibited inside the plastic limit condition.
Loading conditions leading to the failure of the material from a bifurcation point are given.
Finally the microscopic origins of second-order work are analysed.
