Information et pouvoir dans les organisations : un essai de quantification par la théorie des graphes d'influence

Abstract : Taking into consideration the hypothesis that information is imperfect and asymmetric and that the rationality of economic agents is limited has led economists to change the way they formalise markets and firms. Starting from the view of firms as “information processors”, we define the concepts of organisation, information and power in order to provide some theoretical links among them. There are opposite ways of dealing with the power in economics: the radical view assumes that power is a necessary statement of economic analysis whereas the neoclassical view neglects this concept and considers power as irrelevant in explaining economic phenomena. Beyond these two positions, we use a pragmatic approach to make the concept of power within an organisation operational. This approach is called influence graph theory. It associates matrix calculus and graph theory and provides analytic tools of structural analysis such as influence indexes that can be applied to real organisations. The data base use consists in e-mails sent and received during one week in a French “Grande Ecole”. We show that the electronic flows of information between the members of this organisation suggest an accurate characterisation of the organisation. The analysis distinguishes between local and global events. It permits us to compare the hierarchical structure with the informational structure of the organisation.
Finally, on the basis of three definitions inspired by an extensive literature review, this thesis provides a way of formalizing who has the power in organisations viewed as devices of information exchange.
