APPROCHE DES CONDITIONS FONDAMENTALES DE L'HABITABILITE DES ESPACES. POUR UNE CONTRIBUTION A LA GEOGRAPHIE COMME SCIENCE DE L'HABITER.

Abstract : This paper comes within the perspective of an anthropogeographic research faithful in many respects, as much philosophically as in its experimental implementation, to Eric Dardel's conception of geography. It underlines the necessity of comprehending Geography as the science of dwelling by analyzing to that end the fundamental conditions of space habitability through the exploitation of a complex and representative empirical material. Based more particularly on Georges Hubert de Radkowski's recently published works on habitat anthropology, as well as on the Husserlian and Habermassian Lifeworld-related enunciations, this paper, which is utterly geographic, proposes and discusses a definition of dwelling aimed at separating this notion from the representations our sedentary and Western societies have assigned to it by restrictively associating habitat with the dwelling space strictly speaking. Examining space habitability - be it the world space, the State (France, Jordan), the region (Wadi Rum Desert, Touraine...), the city (Tours, Amman), the "city quarters", some of their dwelling places (high-rise housing estates, boarding schools, hotels), domestic spaces strictly speaking (tent, apartment, house) or the Self space in general, and especially their necessary mutual interactions -, this research renders the material, immaterial and conceptual phenomena of dwelling according to what founds them: the society/space dialogy and, always depending on it, the individual/space relation within which, through which and for which these acts of dwelling manifest themselves in the entire duration and synchrony of existence. Focusing as much on the deciphering of the historical and contemporary societal logics as on the study of certain acts - sometimes insignificant and yet ritual - that contribute to forming the habitat spaces of the human societies as a whole, as well as within the framework of their relations as "cohabiting" member groups or individuals of these spaces, this paper's approach is both heuristic and political. It partakes of the institution of a Geography which is neither individualistic nor spatialist, coming within the post-productivist if not postmodern civilisation process, supposed to renew the development stakes of the human societies present on Earth and ensure the essential welfare of all those who inhabit it together.
