Comportement vitreux des systèmes athermiques:
étude expérimentale d'un matériau granulaire bidimensionnel

Abstract : This thesis deals with the glassy behaviour of athermal systems through the case of granular materials. The experimental setup consists in a bidimensional horizontal pile of 8,000 cylinders under quasistatic cyclic shear. A tracking of the grains from one cycle to the other is performed. A detailed study of the diffusion properties and a comparison with experiments on model thermal systems (such as colloids) and numerical simulations show that the analogy between granular matter close to the jamming transition and glassy systems has its origin at the particle scale. We then turn to the study of dynamical heterogeneities, responsible for the non exponential relaxation of these systems. In addition to the measurement of quantities such as the typical size and lifetime of the heterogeneities, we perform the first direct experimental measurement of 4-point spatio-temporal correlation functions. Their behaviour is compared with theoretical predictions. We also study in detail the structure of the pile in terms of topological defects. The structure and dynamics of these defects are both heterogeneous. We look for a possible correlation with dynamical heterogeneities. Finally, we suggest, sometimes on the basis of first experimental tests, future studies which could be performed on this setup.
