Relação entre o Nível de Isolamento Térmico da Envolvente dos Edifícios e o Potencial de Sobreaquecimento no Verão

Abstract : There is a tendency for prescribing more and more severe restrictions for the building envelope insulation in the European legislations, in particular after the recent European Directive on the Energy Performance of Buildings. This research aims at establishing the impact of the increase of the envelope insulation upon the Summer thermal performance of buildings in Portugal and Southern European climates. The benefits of increasing the insulation thickness are evident in a typical Winter situation. However, under certain conditions, during Summer, a highly insulated envelope turns heat dissipation towards the exterior difficult, contributing to increased internal temperatures above the comfort limits.

The methodology is based on parametric studies obtained through computational simulations. Distinct building models were considered, with various internal gains, ventilation patterns and shading factors. In this way, it is possible to investigate the influence of various parameters upon the thermal building behaviour, and to make comparative analyses. It is investigated when overheating occurs and the consequences in terms of both occupant comfort and cooling consumption increase, which can undermine the Winter energy savings. The comfort analysis methodology is based on the Adaptive Approach.

The results show that, with added insulation, it is necessary to control solar and internal gains more closely to avoid overheating in Summer. Finally, a simple theoretical model, that calculates the buildings average interior temperature, was developed. The model was applied for the simulated cases and it produced good results.
