Valeur et mesure dans les Recherches sur les principes mathématiques de la théorie des richesses d'Antoine-Augustin Cournot

Abstract : The Researches into the Mathematical Principles of the Theory of Wealth, published by Antoine-Augustin Cournot (1801-1877) in 1838 is usually viewed as providing seminal insights towards modern economics: this book especially exerted a great influence over marginalist economists by the end of the 19th century. Nevertheless, Cournot's work cannot be properly understood if not put back in the context of classical political economy and read through the lens of his own time. The thesis' core is primarily to enhance the importance of this above mentioned context and to provide epistemological materials as tools of understanding.
As a result, the thesis demonstrates that, far from breaking off with the theory of his time, Cournot's approach exhibits a commitment to classical concepts of value: according to him, value is not a single concept but refers to several level of valuation, both intertwined and articulated. The thesis also stresses the originality of Cournot's epistemological posture, and the way he conceives the role of mathematics in scientific knowledge.
