Vision et pilotage d'entreprise : conceptualisation, représentation et pratiques

Abstract : The main purpose of this thesis is to capture the essence of an organization within the context of strategic management. The central research issue is “How can the concept of strategic vision be used in order to understand the strategic management of an organization and provide a global representation of it ?” To answer this question an abductive research pattern, characterized by constant dialog between the existing literature and the research sample, is chosen. A qualitative methodology is adopted. The empirical data are provided by 65 semi-directed interviews with CEOs and top managers from 11 French groups. A content analysis based methodology is set up in order to analyze these data. This research provides an original classification of the existing literature in 4 successive and complementary levels (vision as the leader's property, shared and co-created vision, vision as a collective representation, diversity as a way to counterbalance the negative effects of an over-focused vision). The research also highlights different organizational profiles corresponding to different articulations of strategic management mechanisms (such as core values, strategies, paradigm, etc.) So, this thesis provides a framework (and its graphic representation) for a vision driven strategic management, in which organizational actions are framed and oriented in direction of the vision. Beyond this, in a more global view, this work shows that strategic management needs to deal with 3 major stakes. First, the adaptation of action to the context in which the firm evolves. Second, the overall coherence between strategies and the others mechanisms used for strategic management. Finally a constant attention is needed both in the implementation of strategic actions and in the evaluation of the right emphasis to be put on each of these actions. Therefore, it appears that strategic management deals more with fine tuning than with the application of any ready-to-use method.
