Renforcement par géosynthétiques des remblais sur inclusions rigides, étude expérimentale en vraie grandeur et analyse numérique.

Abstract : The design of geotechnical earth structures on soft soil is quite difficult due to the important relative settlements. Currently there are many solutions to improve quality of these soils, particularly all the methods including piles. Among these methods, one of them, of full expansion in specific countries, consists in adding to the top of network of piles a reinforced geosynthetic sheet. Following this method, the loads due to the embankment are transmitted to the piles either directly by arching effect in the embankment soil, or indirectly by the way of membrane effect in the geosynthetic sheet.

The aim of this study is, on the one hand, to a better understanding of the behaviour of these structures in order to improve the designing methods, on the other hand, to test an experimental device allowing of follow-up in time the behaviour of the structure (system of measurement by optical fibres Géodetect). To achieve this goal, a gathering research program of experiments and numerical modelling, was undertaken in collaboration with the Tencate company. Full-scale experiments were carried out in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia under specific conditions to study the behaviour of the membrane effect of the geosynthetic sheet above the network of piles and to apprehend the phenomena of transfer of load.

An original modelling coupling finite elements and discrete elements was developed to complete the experimental study. The continuous approach made it possible to model effectively the behaviour of membrane effect of the geosynthetic sheet. As for the discrete approach, it made it possible to analyze the mechanisms of transfer of load in the embankment. The comparison and the analysis of the results made it possible to better understand these mechanisms and to better apprehend the designing of these structures.
