The ALICE Project at the IPN, Orsay
R&D and software developments 1996-2003

Abstract : This document describes the main steps in the R&D carried out for the station 1 Cathode Pad Chambers of the Dimuon Arm Spectrometer in the ALICE experiment, recently installed at the LHC. It includes details addressing different experimental aspects - including electronics, mechanical construction, detector modelling, physics and test beam simulations, object oriented mapping algorithms and prototype test beam results. It is written with the novice experimentalist in mind.
