Abstract : The GIS, geographical information systems, store geo-referenced
data in geographical databases. Storage of geographical data is of
great use in many areas. One frequent use of GIS is in the context
of spatial decision-making. However, GIS technology suffers from
several limitations that are due to lack of analysis tools
necessary for dealing with the multicriteria nature of spatial
problems. To enhance the role of GIS in spatial decision-making,
most of researchers support the idea of coupling the GIS with multicriteria analysis (MCA). A great deal of papers concerning
GIS-MCA integration have been published since 1990. However, these
works have several limitations that prevent them from going beyond
the academic contexts: (i) the use of loose or tight integration
modes, (ii) incorporation of only one or a limited number of
methods, (iii) lack of a formal methodology to assist the decision
maker during the selection of the method to apply in a given
problem, (iv) integration of weighted-sum like decision rules, and
(v) the need for a good knowledge about GIS and MCA. In this
thesis, our objective is to propose conceptual, methodological and
computational solutions to handle these problems. More precisely,
we propose: (i) a strategy for coupling GIS and MCA, (ii) a
rule-based module for the selection of the multicriteria
aggregation procedure, (iii) a methodology for multicriteria
decisional cartography permitting the use of outranking methods,
and (iv) an algebra for multicriteria spatial modeling. To
validate the solutions proposed in this research, we have
developed a prototype and applied it to a problem of corridor
generation using real data relative to Ile-de-France region.
