Applications à la transformation de la matière molle

Abstract : The work presented in this thesis for the French degree of Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches is on the border between soft-matter physics and chemical engineering and uses physics to develop and give a scientific basis to new concepts and tools for the engineer. In the case of membrane colloid filtration which constitutes the major part of this work, the tool developed is the concept of critical flux which allows filtration operating conditions to be defined that are critical in terms of fouling reversibility. The model developed in this work relates the appearance of irreversible deposits on membranes to phase transitions occurring in colloidal dispersions because of inter-particles interactions. Various concepts are developed, on the one hand experimental and practical (with the determination of critical filtration conditions in dead-end and cross-flow filtration and their use in optimizing process operation) and on the other theoretical (with modelling of the phase transitions and the simulation of fouling development in the process). The theoretical concepts developed, based on the way the interactions affect the accumulation of matter, unify different descriptive models (cake filtration law, concentration polarization) using a single approach. Taking into account the complexity generated in the process of filtration by the physicochemical interactions ultimately simplifies the description of fouling. From a wider viewpoint, these studies and the prospects associated should contribute to developing a new branch of chemical engineering: the engineering of physico-chemical interactions.
