Le renforcement des sols compressibles par inclusions rigides verticales. Modélisation physique et numérique.

Abstract : Soft soil improvement by vertical rigid piles is a technique which associates a pile grid and a granular earth platform, intercalated between the improved soil and the surface structure. Arching occurs in the granular fill, which permits partial load transfer onto the piles, the
surface settlement reduction and homogenization, in order to insure the structure good working and durability. The reinforcement can be completed by a geosynthetic, laid at the platform base, working in membrane effect. The main application areas are road- and railway embankment foundations and industrial area foundations. The various elements composing the system are in strong and complex interaction.
This PhD thesis work is a contribution to the understanding of the behaviour of this type of structure, and focuses more precisely on the modelling of the mechanisms developing in the earth platform. It consists of three parts.
The first part presents the context and the objectives.
The second part is dedicated to the constitution of an experimental database, precise and complete in term of both loads and displacements, in order to serve as a reference for various numerical modelling approaches. A physical two-dimensional modelling using analogical materials is developed.
The third part concerns the numerical modelling. It first consists in a two-dimensional modelling in a continuum, validated by confrontation to the experimental results. Specific constitutive models for the various materials are implemented. The parametric study can then be numerically extended. The next step of the numerical modelling consists in simulating realistic threedimensional cases in a continuum. The soft soil and the granular earth platform soil behaviours are taken into account by various constitutive models, showing increasing degrees of complexity. A pile grid unit cell is first represented, and the system is then represented by a current embankment section with lateral slopes.
