Effets de l'informatisation sur la productivité et la demande de capital humain

Abstract : The prices of information and communication technologies (ICT) have strongly decreased during the 90s. As a result, firms have adopted ICT and changed their use of other inputs. The spread of ICT raises (at least) two economic issues. Has it induced productivity gains? And have all workers benefited from these productivity gains or only some of them because of higher complementarities with ICT? The four essays of this dissertation bring empirical evidence on these issues.
The first article uses traditional growth accounting methods and shows that the use and production of ICT have significantly contributed to the growth of value added during the 90s in France.
The second article proposes a novel method measuring the bias of ICT in favour of skilled workers. This method is based on the production function and treats the bias due to the endogeneity of ICT adoption. The corresponding estimates with a sample of French firms are nevertheless too imprecise to conclude.
The third article examines the effect of ICT on multifactor productivity. The results suggest that the manufacturing firms which have adopted Internet during the 90s in France have significantly increased their productivity by raising the efficiency of female and skilled workers.
The last article evaluates the impact of ICT adoption on the demand for human capital. According to the results, the manufacturing firms which have adopted ICT during the 90s in France have not changed their labour demand or their wages at the benefit of skilled or young workers. Considering the adoption of ICT and the use or adoption of new work practices does not change the results of the last two articles.
