Abstract : In most of Third world countries, especially in mountain areas, humans take in their
natural environment the resources they need to survive. So the villages of the Moroccan high
mountains are dependent on the natural resources available in the environment, and more exactly in
the forest, to feed or to treat the livestock, to build houses and sheepfolds or for heating and
cooking. But this strong relationship between humans and trees, associated with the population
growth induce a severe degradation of forest ecosystems.
In this study of a Juniperus thurifera woodland in a small valley of High Atlas Mountains in
Morocco (Azzaden valley), we worked (1) to precise potentialities and resources of this high
mountain mediterranean ecosystem: wood stock and productivity (with an original non destructive
method for estimating biomass), carbon cycle and nutrients cycle; (2) to determine the influence of
the anthropic factors on soil and vegetation degradation (elaboration of a regressive evolution
model of the woodland), and on natural regeneration problems of Juniperus thurifera.
Beyond the importance of new data on a threatened species and of ecological, economical and
sociological impact of the deforestation in a small High Atlas valley, this study has a more general
interest. The Azzaden valley can be considered like a model to study a mediterranean ecosystem
affected by anthropic degradation, and the data collected provide informations on various problems
like steppization, overgrazing, energizing ressources, soil erosion and variations of carbon stock in
mountain semi-arid environments.
