Conditions pré-éruptives et dégazage des magmas andésitiques de la Montagne Pelée (Martinique) : étude pétrologique et expérimentale

Abstract : The 1902, May 8, cataclysmic eruption of Mount Pelée (Martinique) was responsiblefor the loss of 30, 000 lives and of the destruction of the city of St Pierre. The stratigraphyrecord of pyroclastics products during the last 10, 000 years provide evidence for two distinct eruption types : the plinian eruptions are characterized by pluri-kilometric eruptive columns and give rise to highly vesiculated deposits ; the pelean eriptions are characterized by dome extrusions of poorly vesiculated lavast that either periodically collapse in gravity driven "nuées ardentes" of low explosivity or, more rarely, give rise to extremely violent surges, as illustrated bu the May 8, 1902 eruption.
