Evaluation expérimentale de l'apport, pour une formation d'ingénieurs, d'un simulateur informatique en travaux pratiques de bureau d'études mécaniques

Abstract : The profession of engineering designer changes: new work organizations, new dataprocessing tools, new methods. What is at stake in this work is to take into account these evolutions in the technological higher education.
The objective is to measure the difficulties encountered by students during a new practical work of mechanical engineering design. This one consists in simulating the design of an industrial machine, by distributing the tasks among two designers teams, who work at distance. Three students activities were analyzed, in reference to three professional tasks: the search for existing products in an hypertext data base, for a reinvestment in design; collective design of a machine substructure by a group of 3 students; the coordination of two groups working at different places, communicating by E-Mail and videoconferences to make compatible the substructures designed by each group.
The reasoning and knowledge used in these three activities are specified thanks to concepts resulting from cognitive psychology and ergonomy. Then results of research in science and design education make it possible to make assumptions on the difficulties of the students. Lastly, these hypothesis are validated by the observation of the students activities.
The principal results are as follows. The students make an incomplete information retrieval, because they build themselves a false representation of the information organisation of manufacturers Internet sites. They choose technical solutions unsuited to the medium where the machine should run, by ignorance of this concept of medium and because they adopt a school logic of problem resolution. They design an incoherent machine because their principal concern is a production local and individual rather than global and collective.
