Abstract : The water industry is under an increasing pressure to produce a potable water of a better quality at a lower cost. The aim of this work is the Development of a tool for the monitoring/diagnosis of a whole potable water production plant. Before being interested in the whole plant, it appeared that the coagulation-flocculation was a key step in the potable water production process. The first part of the thesis consisted in developing a software sensor enabling the on-line prediction of the coagulant dosage, on the basis of the measured raw water characteristics, using neural networks. The second part which presents a more innovative aspect lies on the use of this information in a structure of diagnosis of the whole treatment plant. From the on-line measurements commonly performed, a tool for monitoring and diagnosis of the processes of the whole plant has been developed. It is based on the application of a classification technique and on the interpretation of the obtained information on all the processes with the aim of the identification of faults and a help for the preventive/predictive maintenance of the different plant units. A technique based on the fuzzy entropy and the definition of a validation index has been developed to allow the validation or not of a transition between functional states (i.e. between classes) enabling thus the elimination of ill-conditioned classes or false alarms. These works have been performed in collaboration with the potable water production plant of SMAPA in the town of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, Mexico.
