Étude des processus de stockage de la matière organique et de régénération des tourbières dégradées après exploitation : sites du Russey (Jura français), de la Chaux d'Abel (Jura suisse) et de Baupte (Cotentin, France).

Abstract : In the context of global climate change, one of the main challenges in the management of
cutover peatlands is to restore the re-establishment of peat-forming vegetation which provide the
long-term carbon sequestrating capacity. In this way, the objectives of this study were to identify
specific indicators of organic matter (OM) re-accumulation in formerly cutover peatlands, currently
at various spontaneous regenerating stages. To identify OM sources and of apprehend its
degradation processes, a combination of micromorphological, elemental and molecular analyses
was carried out on bulk peat samples and fine-grained fractions (< 200μm), and specific peatforming
plants. The accumulated OM in the superficial parts shows contrasting composition (high
C/N, dominance of well-preserved inherited tissues, high sugar contents) compared to that, more
humified, of underlying compartments. These patterns delineated a clear threshold between a
regenerated peat and a catotelm peat. In contrast to early regenerating stages (5-10 years), OM
composition of the more advanced stages (30-40 years) is comparable to that of the non-exploted
zone (homogeneous OM, predominance of Sphagnum spp. markers, high C/N). Principal
component analysis (PCA) highlighted distinct regenerating trajectories for each of study sites,
according to their vegetation and their exploitation mode. Globally, the good carbohydrate
preservation in the peat provided additional indicators of regeneration.
