Génération de la suspension ; influence de l'état initial du mélange.

Abstract : Combustion mechanisms of a suspension of solid particles in a gaseous mixture are studied with the aim of correlating the constant volume explosion characteristics with the initial state of the suspension at ignition time.
Present study concerns, first, the mechanisms of dust suspension generation. A vessel was specially designed for this purpose. It mainly consists of a completely transparent cylindrical chamber with an octogonal cross section and a small length-to-diameter ratio (volume 20l, L/D≈2,2). Particle dispersion in the chamber is achieved by means of the turbulent flow created by the discharge of pressurized air from an auxiliary tank. Experiments were made with cornstarch particle suspensions with average mass concentrations lower than 400 g/m3. Evolutions as function of time of mixture aerodynamic state and dust distribution inside the chamber were recorded with high-speed imaging, LDV and PIV. They indicate that the required delay to obtain an optimal mixture (minimum velocity and turbulence intensity, quasi-homogeneous concentration) is between 500 and 700ms.
Then, the characteristics of combustion at constant volume for this suspension are studied in an explosion chamber with geometrical characteristics similar to those described above and able to support 50 bar overpressures. At stoichiometric concentration, the maximum explosion pressure is 5.8 bar and the burning velocity is 48cm/s. Theses values decrease when the initial turbulent intensity decreases.
