Influence des termes d'ordre supérieur dans l'énergie d'ancrage de cristaux liquides nématiques : transitions d'ancrage, application aux ancrages faibles

Abstract : This work is part of the development of a bistable nematic display. This new electro-optical device requires a better understanding of the anchoring interactions between a nematic liquid crystal and an alignment layer, in order to reach two properties often contradictory: a weak zenithal anchoring and a strong azimuthal anchoring. Our model for the anchoring energy is based on the first two terms of the Fourier expansion. The optical and electro-optical techniques were used to study very weak anchorings, to observe anchoring transitions, as well as to discuss the validity of the model. Based on this model, the study predicted and showed a new anchoring: the anti-conical anchoring. Ultimately, combining a weak anchoring layer with a strongly anisotropic substrate yields surfaces suitable for the nematic bistable display
