Study of the vibrational dynamics of glasses

Abstract : The present thesis work is devoted to the study of the vibrational dynamics in glasses, in particular we investigated the low frequency anomaly: the Boson Peak. In the first chapter the general aspects of the glassy state are. Here wediscuss how the anomalous thermodynamic behavior of glasses can be associated to the presence of the Boson Peak in the density of vibrational state of the glass. In the second chapter we discuss the main spectroscopic techniques used in this study: Nuclear Inelastic Scattering (NIS) and the Inelastic X-ray Scattering (IXS). In the third chapter we present the study of à hyperquenched glass. In this chapter the effects of the thermal history on the dynamical and structural properties of glasses are investigated. The fourth chapter is dedicated to the study of the effect of pressure and density on the DOS of à glass. The changes that the DOS experiences are correlated once more to the macroscopic changes, unless à structural transformation takes place. Finally we present à study on the high frequency dynamics (in the THz frequency region) of glassy ortho-terphenyl, and the effect of pressure on this dynamics is discussed. From the comparison of our results to others data available in the literature it has been possible to deduce some conclusions on the nature of the acoustic modes at energies comparable to that of the BP.
