Le climat motivationnnel en éducation physique et sportive : Etude des antécédents des comportements contrôlants de l'enseignant et formation au soutien des besoins psychologiques des élèves.

Abstract : Asserting as the first teachers' and parents' preoccupation, students' (de)motivation is becoming a pedagogical priority (le Monde de l'Education n°324, avril 2004). The questionning of this thesis was focused on the role of the PE teacher in the class motivational climate. Based on the self-determination theory framework (Deci & Ryan, 2002), the goals of this work were double: after having noticed that teachers were essentially controlling towards their students, our ambition was to (1) examine the determinants of these behaviours, and (2) to try to change them in a way of a better students' needs support. This thesis shows that students judged as less motivated are more subject than others to the teachers' controlling behaviors. In addition, this motivational expectancies effect is all the stronger since the teacher considers that sportive competence is a gift. By contrast, when he envisages as improvable, he tends to treat all students the same way. Nevertheless, if PE teachers tend to be controlling, their motivational style appears malleable. This doctoral work gave rise to the setting up of training to support students' needs. Results have showed the effectiveness of these trainings on both teachers – after having participated, they managed to change their style in a way to better support students' needs of autonomy, competence and affiliation – and students – who, following their teacher's training, engaged themselves even more in learning, reported a less extrinsic motivation and perceived a more autonomy supportive motivational climate.
