Estimation de débit et mesure de vitesse en rivière par Large-Scale Particle Image Velocimetry

Abstract : River gauging needs to be modernized to answer the questions of the hydrologists and hydraulic engineers. The intrusive aspect of classic gauging equipment (current-meter, ADCP) makes measurement impossible in lots of situations, including floods or low flows. This study deals with Large Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV) which consists in the identification of surface velocity field by image analysis. Adding a hydraulic model leads to discharge computation.

A real-time continuous LSPIV prototype was developed on the Iowa River in Iowa City (USA). The first years of operation show that LSPIV discharge estimates are consistent with the rating curve of the site and with current-meter measurements. The creation of an important database allowed a detailed sensitivity study of the technique. Error sources affecting the measurements were identified and quantified. We also developed a numerical simulator allowing more theoretical sensitivity tests.

The mobile aspect of LSPIV was used in a mobile, truck-based unit (truck mounted with a telescopic mast and a camera). This unit showed it reliability for measuring in sites difficult to reach. We also used LSPIV surface velocity fields for validating a hydraulic model of a complex flow area (downstream connection of an abandoned channel on the Ain River, France), and for the study the possibility of estimating the bathymetry of a channel.
