Etude expérimentale multi-échelles de la dynamique de l'eau dans les membranes ionomères utilisées en pile à combustible.

Abstract : An original experimental method for probing water dynamics in ion exchange polymeric membranes used for fuel cell application is reported. Based on the use of three complementary techniques, the diffusion of water molecules was investigated on a molecular scale (quasielastic neutron scattering ; 1 pico s < t < 1 ns), on a macroscopic scale (pulsed field gradient NMR ; 1milli s < t < 1 s) and on an “intermediate” scale (NMR relaxometry ; 1 nano s < t < 10 micro s). The experiments were carried out as a function of the quantity of adsorbed water, in the Nafion® membrane and in naphthalenic sulfonated polyimides. The analysis of the experimental data enables to specify the space scales of the decelerations of the diffusion in the two materials. We highlight the structural aspects which allow a better mobility of water in Nafion® than in sulfonated polyimide.
