Abstract : This research work is the first fundamental study carried out with the purpose of investigating the effects of hydrodynamic forcings onto beach morpho-sedimentary change along the Iroise Sea coast. It is supported by the Coastal Domain Observatory (Universe Sciences Observatory) that focuses on the observation of long term variability of biological, chemical, physical parameters in the coastal domain. Within this issue, four field sites have been chosen as good indicators of morphological and hydrodynamic diversity in this macrotidal and swell-dominated setting. Convenient field methods have been deployed to accurately deal with the several spatial and temporal scales involved in hydrosedimentary beach behaviour, which are beach topographic monitoring over years and short field campaigns of high frequency hydrodynamic and morphological measurements.

Morphological change of the intertidal zone and dynamics of sandy bodies and features have been investigated from the event to yearly timescales by analyzing profile datasets by means of statistical and volumetric methods. Results show actual trend is to profile retreat/progradation on beaches dominated by cross-shore transport while to a relative stability for those dominated by longshore transport. However some evidence (i.e. - 3 m depth of closure and non zero sediment budget) araise questions about longshore transport impact on yearly beach sediment availability.

At a shorter timescale (from tides to weeks) field experiments provide characterization of wave agitation in the intertidal zone during various energetic conditions and analysis of the tidal control on hydrodynamic processes spatial and temporal variability. Wave transformation in shallow waters is actually involved in spatialization of wave-induced currents (and thus in sediment transport direction) and also in sediment bodies formation (swash bars, beach cusps) by secondary wave generation.
