Développement de la Technique de Spectroscopie d'Absorption UV, pour l'Etude de l'Emission de NO dans la Chambre de Combustion d'un Moteur à Allumage Commandé

Abstract : This investigation is devoted to develop the direct UV absorption spectroscopy using a broadband lamp, in order to perform quantitative measurements of nitric oxide (NO) concentrations in the combustion chamber of a spark ignition engine. This diagnostic tool allows to infer the concentration of the absorbing specie and/or temperature, using the acquired absorption spectra.
A theoretical and bibliographical study details the shelves related to the application of this technique for measurements in internal combustion engines. In other respects, the measurements' quantification requires an absorption calibration. This task is dedicated to a simulation model, carried out in this work. The experimental validation of these calculations pointed out several limits of the model, especially when the studied molecule is under very high pressures (up to 30 bars) or temperatures (up to 1700 K).
The engine application highlights the limits of this technique for the NO detection. Three difficulties prevent a useful detection of NO inside the combustion chamber: low NO emission level by the combustion process (because of the engine optical accesses), broad band absorption by other molecules (due to very high mixture-temperatures inside the combustion chamber) and the beam steering (caused by the in-cylinder mixture inhomogeneities). Solutions then were proposed and experimented.
To manage quantifying the acquired spectra, a new method is proposed based on the use of both the g(0,0) and g(1,0) absorption bands of NO. This procedure permitted to find out local values of NO concentrations and temperature, during the compression phase and the beginning of the combustion one.
