Auto-focalisation laser et photoréfractivité: des modélisations aux applications.

Abstract : It is in the field of both photorefractivity and laser self-focusing that I have mainly conducted my
research activities. This book is its tentative exhaustive description. Details have been omitted
so as to keep internal coherence at its best. If necessary, they can be found in other publications
such as Ph.D. theses or scientific journals.
We shall start by a description of the reasons that led us to conduct research in this field. The
first insights in photorefractive self-focusing are given in the first part — in which previous work
and teaching works are also addressed. The second part is devoted to further developments of this
theme, most of which are still on the way. The third one addresses themes which are different but
related to the previous one by their use of photorefractivity or self-focusing. Appendices are where
marginal though original mathematical considerations can be found — including one in English.
Last but not least, references have found their way to the last pages.
At first, the existence of laser beam self focusing is demonstrated through experimental evidences,
for continuous wave lasers as well as for nanosecond pulsed illuminations. These results
are explained with the help of two models, one of which needs fast and parallel computations.
Hints of the algorithms developed are then given. Last, other themes have grown on the basis of
our studies, namely photorefractive double self-conjugation and photopolymer self-focusing.
